Woah Mama: Renegade Takes on 7 New or Soon-to-Be Moms

Known as the season of renewal and rebirth, springtime often presents a unique set of challenges for shelters and rescue organizations. Known throughout the rescue world as, “Puppy Season,” this time of year often means a sudden influx of pregnant or nursing dogs needing rescue intervention.

However, Spring came early this year for our fosters and volunteers with seven expectant or new mothers, along with their puppies, seeking temporary foster homes. With the community rallying behind our efforts, Renegade set to work finding a warm place for puppies and mothers alike—something that would not have been possible without the endless support of Renegades across the country!

One of the seven mothers, Mama Juno, a young Chihuahua mix, entered rescue as a pregnant stray, a story not uncommon for many unaltered female dogs who find themselves on the streets. Upon her initial intake, her rescuers were shocked to see the tiny dog was almost twice her size. Juno was miserably pregnant, and the puppies were coming any day.

Unafraid of the challenge, veteran puppy foster and case manager, Kathleen, prepared a safe place for the young pup to have her babies. Juno’s large size attracted the attention of several members of our foster family as volunteers placed guesses on how many puppies the chihuahua mix would eventually have. But, on February 3rd, 2022, Juno delivered exactly nine healthy puppies; We are also thrilled to report that, at the time of this writing, all 10 including Mama Juno, have found their forever homes.

Another one of our mothers, GreenBean, a small terrier mix, found herself in rescue with her brand new babies in early January 2022. Spotted by a good Samaritan on the side of the road in Savannah, the young mom “came to us scared and protective of her newborns and was cautious of anyone around her babies,” says foster Melissa, but by the third day Greenbean “was eating out of our hands and curious about the other dogs in the house.” Mama, as she is affectionately called by her foster family, continues to thrive in her foster home with puppy, Cucumber, gaining confidence each day.

Among the other mothers included are Merry, Marvel, Mama Daisy, Mama Banks, and Athena. Like Mame Juno and GreenBean, all dogs will receive necessary prenatal care with seasoned fosters to ensure the wellbeing of all expectant or new mothers and their puppies.

We are so grateful for the continued support of our community which allows us to help as many unwanted, homeless dogs as possible—like these seven deserving mothers and their puppies. Without your tireless dedication to our mission, we would be unable to provide the highest level of care for unwanted, abused, or injured dogs in the Coastal Empire and surrounding areas.

Thank you, Renegade Nation, for all that you do.
